Tuesday, 7 July, 2015, marked the first ever Seat Auction in the history of Delhi University. With this, Delhi University has become the first university worldwide to conduct such an auction for admitting students. Students from Australia, New York, London etcetera attended the auction at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Delhi’s Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal were also present on the auspicious occasion.
DU’s Vice Chancellor Mr. Dinesh Singh began the ceremony with his momentous speech “This Auction is the need of the hour. This will bring an end to all the fake degree scams, disappointment among general category students regarding reservation and fake documents scams that were taking place in the University”.“ According to our Estimations, University will be able to generate about 1500 Crores this year through Auction and will become World’s Most Expensive University to get admission in by 2017” he added.
The audience, of course was eagerly waiting for PM’s say on the matter and he didn’t let them down as always. “Mere Priye Mitron, this is not just mine or your achievement; this is our nation’s achievement. This is the beginning of a new era in Indian education system. India has already made its presence count on international level in the past one year and this auction will make us stand at par with United States” said Mr. Modi.
Mr. Kejriwal also came on the podium but when asked a question regarding his minister Jitendra Singh Tomar’s degree controversy he got a cough attack and had to leave the premises for a check-up immediately.
The procedure of auction is way simpler for students as well as University as compared to complicated admission process that was being followed earlier. Students have to register themselves online for the Auction. Then they’ll get a slot of a specific day on which they have to be present physically with a blank cheque. Next is on the day of auction they will have to buy a seat for themselves i.e. they have to bid for the seat of the college in which they want admission. Obviously, the highest bidder would win the seat. North Campus Colleges like SRCC, Hindu, Hansraj etc. have a higher base price and South Campus and Off-Campus Colleges a bit lower as compared to them. Same goes for courses. Following are the base prices of a B. Com. (Honours) seat of some reputed colleges of Delhi University:
College/Institution Base Price (in lakhs)
Shri Ram College of Commerce 30
Hansraj College 29.95
Hindu College 29.9
Lady Shri Ram College 30
Sri Venkateswara College 29
The Auction received a great response from students all over the world on its first day of commencement. Expectedly, we will be able to see more students in the upcoming rounds of the Auction. You can check for the complete base price list on DU’s website.
